The story of Ale
Ale was an important source of food in medieval Europe. It was one of the three primary sources of groats in the diet in 14th century England, along with porridge and bread.[2] Researchers believe that grains accounted for about 80% of caloric intake among farmers and about 75% among soldiers. Even nobles got about 65% of their calories from groats.[3]
Low-alcohol beer, which can be very nutritious, not only consisted of alcohol, but could also hydrate people without making them drunk. This type of beer has been consumed daily by virtually everyone, including children, while beer with a higher alcohol percentage has been used more for recreational purposes
India Pale Ale
India Pale Ale or IPA is an English type of beer that was developed to cope with the voyage to India.
In the past, the English sailed their beer to the colonies in India, as it was too hot to brew the beer locally. However, the long journey and the large temperature fluctuations meant that the beer had difficulty coping with the trip. And since pasteurization was unknown, a type of beer with a higher alcohol content was developed, with more hops added at the same time. Both parts helped preserve the beer, so the risk of it going bad during the long journey was reduced.
Due to the large amount of hops, the IPA is a relatively bitter beer (high IBU). This bitterness is offset by the aroma hops, which help to give the beer a more fruity taste. Try for example: Ricky's IPA or Lagunitas IPA
